Egyptian Lemongrass FOB Cairo Holds Firm Despite Softer Freight Risk

Egyptian lemongrass FOB Cairo stays near 1.02 EUR/kg as strong essential-oils demand offsets easing freight risk and stable weather in key growing regions.

Lemongrass FOB Cairo prices in EUR are broadly steady with only a marginal dip, as solid export demand and an elevated essential-oils complex offset slightly easing freight and stable weather in Egypt. Egyptian lemongrass continues to benefit from resilient global demand for natural ingredients and essential oils, allowing exporters to maintain firm EUR-based quotations even as shipping risks in the Red Sea stabilize and container rates show signs of plateauing. Recent days brought no weather shocks in the Nile Delta and key herb-growing zones, while maritime security concerns around Bab el-Mandeb remain contained but still priced into logistics. Currency moves in EUR/EGP are modest, so most of the latest price action reflects underlying herb fundamentals rather than FX. Overall, the market remains balanced to mildly tight, with buyers advised to monitor freight surcharges and capacity rather than field conditions at this stage.

Prices

FOB Cairo prices for conventional cut lemongrass from Egypt are essentially flat week-on-week in EUR terms, with only a fractional downtick compared to early September, following a strong upward run through August. Price indications remain supported by firm essential oil and herb markets in Egypt, where export unit values for essential oils are up double digits year-on-year, signaling persistent strength in the broader aromatic segment.

With the euro relatively stable against the Egyptian pound over recent days, around the upper-50s EGP per EUR, currency effects on export prices are limited, keeping the focus on physical demand and logistics costs rather than FX adjustments.

Supply & Demand

On the demand side, recent trade data for lemongrass oil and related HS codes show ongoing import activity from multiple destinations, underlining continued interest in Egyptian-origin material for flavor, fragrance, and wellness applications.

Supply in Egypt appears seasonally adequate, with no indications of major crop losses or harvest disruptions. Local exporters of herbs and spices are actively quoting new-season material, and price lists updated this week confirm that lemongrass remains a core line in Egypt’s aromatic herb portfolio, with no signs of oversupply-led discounting.

Weather & Growing Conditions

Weather across the Nile Delta and adjacent herb-growing areas over the next 3 days (13‑15 September) is forecast to be hot, dry and stable, with maximum temperatures in the mid-30s °C, low humidity and no meaningful rainfall expected.

These conditions are broadly favorable for harvesting and post-harvest drying of lemongrass, supporting quality and limiting disease pressure. As a result, no weather-related supply risk is expected to influence prices in the very short term.

Logistics & External Factors

Red Sea and Suez routing remains under scrutiny amid renewed tensions and piracy risk around the Arabian Peninsula, but shipping lines are gradually restoring capacity and transits, even as some carriers maintain security and canal surcharges on East-West trades.

Container freight markets globally have cooled slightly in early September compared to peak levels, according to recent weekly ocean rate updates, suggesting limited additional upside pressure on FOB-based lemongrass export prices from freight alone in the coming days.

3-Day Outlook & Trading View

Given stable weather, firm but not accelerating demand, and a slightly softer freight risk backdrop, short-term pricing for Egyptian lemongrass is expected to remain in a narrow range.

  • Exporters: Consider holding offers close to current levels in EUR, with only minor flexibility for volume buyers, as fundamentals remain supportive.
  • Importers: Use the current pause in freight rate escalation to secure Q4 coverage; downside in raw material prices appears limited near term.
  • Traders: Focus on basis and freight negotiations rather than expecting significant flat-price moves over the next week.
