German corn prices edge higher as Euronext futures hold firm, EU summer crops face dryness and Ukraine’s Black Sea grain exports remain heavily constrained.

German and wider EU corn prices are firming, with modest gains in German feed maize supported by resilient futures, tightening Black Sea export flows and weather-related yield risks. Despite recent stability in spot quotations, the risk premium for Q4–Q1 is inching higher as markets price in constrained Ukrainian exports and ongoing geopolitical uncertainty in the Black Sea. In Germany, cash maize has held a steady-to-firm tone in late August, tracking Euronext corn futures around the mid‑€250s/t while regional ex‑farm/feed compounder prices in northern Germany show a mild upward bias. Liquidity remains thin as many farmers wait for clearer harvest prospects, but buyers are increasingly looking to secure autumn coverage. At the same time, persistent export disruptions from Ukraine and reduced EU summer‑crop expectations are capping downside, even as global feed demand growth stays moderate.

Prices

Euronext Paris front corn futures are trading around €254–255/t for nearby positions as of 28 August, broadly flat over the past week but up versus early August levels. German maize cash indicators for August stand near €255/t, unchanged month‑on‑month but still below last year, reflecting improved global supply but firm regional basis.

Against this backdrop, current indicative spot levels imply German EXW feed corn in the northwest in the high‑€280s/t range, representing a modest week‑on‑week uptick and a slight positive basis to Euronext. Domestic prices are being underpinned by proximity to livestock demand and cautious farmer selling ahead of harvest.

Supply & Demand

EU‑27 summer crops, including grain maize, are under pressure from a prolonged hot and dry spell. The European Commission’s JRC reports that yield forecasts for all summer crops have been reduced, with maize projected up to 14% below the five‑year average, though northern Germany so far shows limited observed damage and could still be affected if dryness persists.

On the external side, Ukrainian export potential is being sharply curtailed by the effective blockade of Black Sea ports. Recent reports highlight that traffic through Odesa, Chornomorsk and Pivdennyi has fallen to about one‑fifth of normal capacity amid intensified Russian attacks on port infrastructure and vessels, with significant volumes of corn now being stored inland. This is reducing available low‑cost Black Sea supply into the EU and supporting a firmer basis for EU‑origin corn.

Weather & Crop Outlook (Germany focus)

The latest EU monitoring indicates exceptionally dry and hot conditions across parts of northern Europe, including northern Germany and Denmark, with soil moisture below average. While no major crop damage has yet been confirmed in this belt, the report warns that summer crops such as grain maize may suffer yield losses if the dry pattern extends into early September.

For German corn, this translates into a skewed risk profile: current field conditions still look acceptable in many areas, but the window for grain filling is narrowing. Any further rainfall deficits could trim yields, tightening domestic supply just as feed demand picks up in Q4. This weather risk is helping to underpin current price levels despite soft macroeconomic sentiment.

Market Drivers

  • Futures structure: Euronext corn futures are holding a mild risk premium into late 2026, reflecting uncertainty over Black Sea exports and EU yield outcomes.
  • Input and commodity complex: The broader agricultural raw materials index in Europe rose by about 2% in August, signalling a firmer cost backdrop across feed grains and oilseeds.
  • Black Sea logistics: Ukrainian seaborne grain exports remain severely constrained, with alternative land and river routes still ramping up and expected to cover only part of lost capacity, limiting regional corn availability.
  • Demand side: EU feed demand is stable to slightly softer given economic headwinds, but domestic livestock sectors in Germany continue to require maize as a core feed component, supporting local cash differentials.

Trading Outlook & 3‑Day Price Indication

  • Buyers (feed mills, integrators): Consider covering a portion of Q4 and early‑Q1 corn needs at current levels, as weather risk in northern Germany and prolonged Black Sea disruptions argue for limited downside in the near term.
  • Producers (farmers): Maintain a staggered selling strategy around harvest. Use any short‑term futures softness as an opportunity to lock in additional volumes, but retain flexibility in case weather or logistical shocks push basis higher.
  • Traders: Watch Euronext–German cash spreads and Black Sea newsflow closely; widening basis on any further port attacks or negative crop revisions could open short‑futures / long‑physical hedging opportunities.

3‑day directional outlook (Germany, EUR/t):

  • German corn EXW (feed, north): High‑€280s/t, bias: slightly firmer on weather and Black Sea risk.
  • Euronext Paris nearby corn: Around €255/t, bias: range‑bound to mildly higher on risk premium retention.
  • Germany national maize indicator: Near €255/t, bias: steady, with limited selling pressure pre‑harvest.
