Indian Cardamom Flat but Weather Risks Loom Over Monsoon Crop

Indian green cardamom prices in New Delhi hold steady with slight firming in bold grades, while heavy Kerala monsoon rains keep weather and supply risks elevated.

Indian cardamom export offers are broadly steady in early August, with only minor grade-wise upticks, while heavy monsoon conditions in Kerala keep weather risk firmly on the radar. Short-term supply to New Delhi remains comfortable, but any disruption in Idukki’s small cardamom belt could quickly translate into firmer FOB levels. Exporters should view current values as a consolidation phase rather than a sustained downtrend.

Prices

FOB New Delhi offers for Indian green cardamom on 8 August 2026 are roughly in the following ranges (converted to EUR, assuming 1 EUR ≈ 90 INR):

Across July–early August, FOB prices show a mild upward bias of about 0.20 EUR/kg for several organic and larger grades, while mid-grades (6.5–7.5 mm) have moved sideways, indicating balanced nearby demand.

Supply & Demand

Physical indications from Indian trade channels suggest sufficient near-term availability, with multiple sellers actively offering all grades for export and domestic sale, including fresh 6–7 mm and bold 8 mm lots at competitive levels.  Export enquiry posts still emphasise GCC buyers and long-term bulk contracts, pointing to steady overseas demand without obvious panic buying.

Official data up to late 2025 show India coming off a period of elevated small cardamom auction prices, reflecting the broader upcycle in the crop.  Present flat-to-firm New Delhi quotes suggest the market is consolidating those past gains rather than entering a new bearish phase, helped by ongoing festival and food-industry demand in India and the Middle East.

Weather & Crop Conditions (Kerala/Idukki)

Key Indian small cardamom areas in Kerala’s Idukki and Cardamom Hills continue to face intense southwest monsoon conditions, with local commentary warning against travel to high ranges due to heavy rain, landslip risk and road disruptions.  Recent agromet advisories for Idukki highlight persistently wet, cloudy conditions and advise cardamom growers on disease management under high humidity.

For the next three days (9–11 August 2026), the southwest monsoon is expected to stay active over the Western Ghats, keeping rainfall frequent and temperatures moderate. This is broadly favourable for flowering and capsule set, but sustained heavy showers increase the risk of fungal diseases and may temporarily hinder labour movement and transport from estates, a potential short-term bullish input if disruptions intensify.

Fundamentals & Market Tone

  • Price structure: Larger 7.5–8 mm and 8 mm grades command a firm premium over 6–7 mm, signalling selective buying for high-end export and premium retail packs.
  • Organic differentials: Organic small grades (6.0–6.5 mm, 7.5–8 mm) trade at a notable discount to conventional 7–8 mm, reflecting stronger demand for bold size and colour rather than certification alone.
  • Volatility context: Cardamom historically trades in multi-year boom-bust cycles,  but current week-on-week changes are modest, suggesting a pause after prior rallies rather than a sharp reversal.
  • Logistics/weather risk: Persistent heavy monsoon rains across Idukki may intermittently delay arrivals from plantations, but there is no confirmed large-scale damage to estates at this stage.

Trading Outlook (Next 1–3 Weeks)

  • Short-term direction: Bias mildly firmer for larger conventional grades (7.5 mm and 8 mm) given weather-related logistics risk and steady export interest; smaller and organic grades likely to remain range-bound.
  • Buyers (importers, packers): Consider covering near-term needs at current EUR levels, especially for 7.5 mm and 8 mm, while keeping some volume open for potential post-monsoon dips if weather risks ease.
  • Producers/exporters: Use current stability to selectively book forward sales in premium grades, but retain some upside exposure in case heavy monsoon spells tighten physical flows or trigger quality concerns later in the season.

3-Day Price Indication (FOB New Delhi, EUR)

  • Whole, green 6.0–6.5 mm (organic): Expected to trade broadly steady around 16.7–17.0 EUR/kg over the next three days.
  • Whole, green 7–7.5 mm (conventional): Likely to remain in a narrow 23.8–25.6 EUR/kg band, with a slight upward bias if transport from Kerala is disrupted.
  • Whole, green 8 mm (conventional): Seen firm in the 27.7–28.2 EUR/kg zone, with buyers showing willingness to pay a small premium for reliable, well-graded lots.
