Organic Date Prices Hold Firm as Heat Builds in Key Origins
Concise price update on organic Medjool and Deglet Nour dates from Palestine, Algeria and Pakistan, with weather risks and 3-day outlook.
Prices
FOB offers (converted to EUR) as of 20 August 2026 indicate a stable to slightly firm tone across origins. Recent small week-on-week increases earlier in August have now flattened, suggesting the market is consolidating rather than breaking higher.
Nominal EUR values use an indicative USD/EUR rate and reflect no meaningful move versus last week, after modest increments earlier in August.
Supply & Demand
In Algeria (DZ), Deglet Nour producers are entering the final stretch before the new harvest, with earlier reports already highlighting unusually high stocks still in cold storage just a couple of months before the new crop. This lingering carryover continues to weigh on export offers despite good organic demand from Europe and the Maghreb.
Pakistan (PK) remains a key global date supplier, with major production clusters in Sindh and Balochistan. Recent agro-climatic guidance pointed to below-average monsoon rainfall for much of Sindh and southern Punjab, constraining water availability but broadly keeping harvest expectations only slightly below average rather than sharply reduced. Export pipelines for value-added diced dates have not shown notable disruption so far.
For Palestine (PS), Medjool supply is structurally tighter and heavily oriented to premium export markets. Strong ethical and origin-focused demand from EU buyers keeps a firmness premium, but the current spot tone is more balanced as buyers complete pre-Ramadan coverage gradually rather than front-loading purchases.
Weather & Crop Conditions (DZ / PK / PS)
Palestine / Jordan Valley (PS region): A hot air mass over the Levant is driving temperatures well above seasonal norms, with regional forecasters calling for peak heat on Friday 21 August, particularly in the Jordan Valley and adjacent lowlands where highs in the upper 30s to low 40s°C are expected. For Medjool, this coincides with advanced ripening and drying on the palm; persistent extreme heat can accelerate sugar concentration but may also increase sunburn and moisture-loss risks.
Algeria (DZ): Forecasts for August in Algeria indicate seasonally hot, dry conditions across the main southern oases, with no major anomalies flagged in the last days that would sharply alter crop prospects. Given the already large stocks, normal weather is more a quality than a volume story at this point; growers are focused on avoiding heat-related deterioration of stored fruit and ensuring adequate cold-chain performance.
Pakistan (PK): In Sindh and parts of Balochistan, the monsoon has brought intermittently heavy rains and humidity, but recent official situation reports for August emphasise localised flooding rather than widespread agricultural devastation. Earlier seasonal forecasts of below-average monsoon totals in parts of southern Pakistan suggest irrigation stress may cap yields in some groves, but, at this stage, the impact on exportable organic diced volumes appears manageable.
Fundamentals & Market Drivers
- Stocks vs. new crop (DZ): High Deglet Nour inventories in Algerian cold stores continue to limit upside for FOB prices ahead of the new season, even as quality differentials for well-sorted organic lots widen.
- Weather premium (PS): The current heat episode in the Jordan Valley adds a modest weather risk premium to top-grade Medjool, particularly if sustained heat affects sizing or increases sorting losses.
- Stable trade flows (PK): Despite uneven monsoon conditions, there are no clear signs yet of major export bottlenecks for Pakistan’s processed date products, keeping diced-organic prices anchored.
- Demand seasonality: With buyers in Europe and MENA gradually positioning for Ramadan 2027, forward interest is supportive but not yet aggressive enough to force a near-term price breakout.
3-Day Outlook & Trading View (DZ / PK / PS)
Weather, next 3 days (21–23 August 2026)
- PS (Jordan Valley / Jericho corridor): Very hot, mostly dry; peak heat around 21 August with highs around 40°C in low-lying date areas, then marginal easing.
- DZ (Saharan oases): Persistently hot and dry, with typical August highs; no acute heat anomaly beyond seasonal expectations reported in recent regional outlooks.
- PK (Sindh/Balochistan): Warm to hot with scattered monsoon showers and high humidity; localised flooding risk remains, but widespread orchard damage is not currently indicated.
Price direction, next 3 days
- PS Medjool (FOB, organic): Bias: sideways to slightly firmer. Extreme heat may support a small quality risk premium, but limited trading days and steady offers suggest no sharp move.
- DZ Deglet Nour (FOB, organic, pitted): Bias: flat. Heavy carryover and normal weather keep the market capped despite solid export interest.
- PK diced organic dates (FOB): Bias: flat. Monsoon-related logistics noise is not yet severe enough to alter spot pricing.
Trading recommendations (short term)
- Buyers (EU/MENA): Consider locking in a portion of Q4–Q1 Medjool and Deglet Nour coverage at current levels, especially for organic specifications, before any sustained weather or logistics shock reprices premium grades.
- Origin sellers (DZ/PK/PS): Maintain offer discipline on top-quality organic lots; differentiate clearly by size and defect levels to capture premiums in an otherwise flat headline market.
- Traders: Spread opportunities remain mainly inter-origin (PS vs DZ) rather than directional; monitor the evolution of Levant heat and Pakistan monsoon anomalies for any catalyst to move from range-trading to trend-following strategies.
