Sunflower Seeds: Tight Snack Supply Meets Soft Oilseed Complex

Sunflower markets are shifting into a structurally tighter phase for snack seeds, with premium grades leading gains, while the oilseed side remains capped by abundant global supply and cheap Black Sea oil.
With planting area for snack-type sunflower in China down about a quarter year-on-year and high temperatures hurting kernel set, the tightness is concentrated in large, export-grade material. Wholesale and FOB prices for top kernels are already 10–15% above last season’s pre-harvest levels in euro terms, with boutique grades stretching even further. However, global 2026/27 sunflower seed output is at record highs, and low-priced Black Sea sunflower oil is weighing on oil-use seeds and by-products, limiting spillover upside. Against this backdrop, buyers face a narrow window of firmness into mid-September, followed by an elevated risk of correction once the new crop flows to market.

Current indications confirm the structural upshift in snack-seed values, especially for high-quality kernels, while oilseed-linked products are softer. Recent offers (all converted and quoted in EUR) show:
The pattern matches market feedback: the overall price level for snack sunflower ahead of harvest is roughly 10–15% higher than in 2025, with boutique, large-kernel export types achieving 20%+ gains. By contrast, ordinary bulk cargo shows only modest appreciation and even some stagnation, especially where linked to oilseed fundamentals.
Supply & Demand
The key structural driver is a sharp contraction in snack-sunflower acreage. China’s food-use (snack) sunflower area has reportedly fallen from about 8.8 million mu to 6.5 million mu, a cut of roughly 26%. This turns last year’s oversupply into a more balanced-to-tight scenario even before weather effects are considered.
Weather during the pollination window has amplified the tightness at the top end of the market. High temperatures have reduced fruit set and increased empty hulls, cutting the share of large, dense kernels suitable for export. As a result, supply of true premium grades is shrinking much faster than total volume, while ordinary, mixed-quality material remains relatively more available.
On the oilseed side, the picture is almost the opposite. Global sunflower seed production in 2026/27 is expected to reach a record around 62.3 million tonnes, with Black Sea origins leading the expansion. This underpins ample availability of seed for crushing and keeps oil and meal markets well supplied, dampening any spillover support for lower-end snack or dual-use seeds.
Fundamentals & Market Structure
Old-crop inventories of snack sunflower are now largely exhausted, which, together with the acreage reduction and quality issues, is supporting current prices into the pre-harvest window. Sellers of premium grades are in a strong position, as many buyers are still uncovered for late Q4 and early 2027 shipments and are competing for limited high-spec volumes.
However, the market is structurally split. Premium, large-kernel export grades lead the rally, while ordinary, mixed-quality goods and oil-use types are lagging or even easing. Global seed abundance and cheap Black Sea sunflower oil arrivals keep crushing margins positive but cap upside on generic seed and meal. This divergence increases the risk that buyers who chase ordinary goods at pre-harvest highs will face a subsequent value loss once new-crop flows normalize.
Weather & Harvest Outlook
Into late August and early September, weather in China’s key snack-sunflower regions is transitioning from extreme heat toward more normal late-summer conditions, reducing further yield risk but unlikely to reverse damage from the pollination phase. Harvest is expected to ramp up from mid to late September, with a concentrated arrival window.
In the Black Sea and EU, sunflower crops are generally progressing well, supporting the view of a large 2026/27 oilseed harvest. Occasional hot and dry spells are being monitored but, at this stage, are not severe enough to materially challenge the record global crop narrative. For snack markets, that means external pressure on lower-quality segments, but little direct relief for top grades constrained by earlier weather stress.
Short-Term Outlook & Trading Strategy
Market behavior is expected to remain asymmetric in the coming weeks: firm to higher for premium snack grades into early September, but increasingly heavy for ordinary lots and oilseed types after new-crop arrival. The main inflection point is likely in mid to late September, when concentrated new-season supply reaches the market and removes much of the scarcity premium for bulk goods.
- Buyers (roasters, packers): Prioritize securing high-quality, large-kernel volumes promptly, accepting current premiums rather than risking physical shortage. Avoid aggressively chasing ordinary grades at today’s levels; consider staggering coverage through and after the September harvest window.
- Traders & importers: Focus positions on clear quality spreads: long premium snack grades versus short or lightly covered ordinary/oil-use seeds where logistics and risk appetite allow. Be cautious about holding large stocks of generic goods into October, when global seed and oil availability may weigh on prices.
- Producers: For premium-quality fields, scale in sales on current strength but retain some exposure in case of further tightening. For average-quality crops, use pre-harvest firmness to forward-sell part of expected volumes, as a 5–10% price correction post-harvest is likely.
