Ukrainian Rapeseed Edges Lower While EU Futures Hold Firm

Ukrainian rapeseed prices soften slightly while Euronext futures hold firm above €550/t amid Black Sea logistics risks and steady EU crush demand.

Ukrainian rapeseed prices are drifting slightly lower this week despite firm Euronext values, as logistics risk around Odesa and Black Sea ports continues to cap upside and widen basis versus Paris. With domestic CPT/FCA bids in Ukraine broadly stable but off recent highs, and November rapeseed futures in Paris holding above €550/t, the market is caught between solid export demand, constrained Black Sea flows and seasonally quieter farmer selling. Mild, dry early‑September weather in southern Ukraine is broadly neutral for remaining fieldwork, keeping attention squarely on logistics, policy support measures and EU crush demand rather than on short‑term yield risk.

Prices

Domestic Ukrainian rapeseed values are slightly softer week-on-week but broadly range-bound. In Odesa, CPT bids for rapeseed are hovering just under €450/t, marginally below last week’s peak but still well supported versus August levels. FCA bids in Kyiv and Odesa for 42% oilseed remain at a premium to CPT, reflecting road/rail loading costs and the scarcity of top-quality parcels.

On Euronext, November-2026 rapeseed futures have consolidated around €550–557/t so far in September, with settlements between €551.50–556.75/t from 2–3 September, extending the rebound from late August levels near €540/t. This keeps the paper market clearly above Ukrainian physical levels, preserving an export incentive but leaving traders exposed to ongoing Black Sea disruption.

Supply & Demand

Structurally, Ukraine is heading into 2026/27 with a slightly larger rapeseed crop and robust export potential, with recent estimates pointing to production around 3.4–3.6 Mt and exports near 2.0–2.1 Mt. However, Russia’s intensified attacks on Odesa-region ports and shipping lanes in the Black Sea are constraining export flows and raising freight and insurance costs, effectively discounting Ukrainian origin versus EU benchmarks.

The Ukrainian government has responded with fresh support measures for farmers operating under disrupted logistics, including adjustments to payment deadlines under export contracts for major grains and oilseeds. While rapeseed is not always singled out, the broader easing of contractual conditions supports liquidity and helps prevent forced selling at distressed prices.

In the EU, the rapeseed balance is more comfortable but not burdensome. Recent EU and UK analyses point to a modest downgrading of the 2026 rapeseed crop estimate (around 19.4 Mt for the EU) and stable-to-firm crush demand, underpinning Euronext prices despite the end of harvest pressure. This keeps Europe reliant on Ukrainian and Australian supplies to fully cover demand.

Weather & Logistics Focus: Southern Ukraine

Early September weather in Odesa is seasonally mild to warm, with forecast daytime highs mostly in the low-to-mid 20s °C and limited rainfall over the coming days, according to regional outlooks. This is broadly neutral for rapeseed, as harvest is largely complete and fieldwork for the next winter crop benefits from dry windows.

As a result, short-term price risk is driven far more by logistics than by weather. Continued Russian strikes on Odesa-region port infrastructure and civilian shipping keep export pace below potential. Any further escalation that temporarily halts loadings would likely widen the discount on Ukrainian rapeseed to Euronext; conversely, signs of improved security or alternative corridor capacity would narrow basis quickly.

Fundamentals & Market Drivers

  • EU futures support: The Euronext Rapeseed Commodity Index is up roughly 25% year-on-year, highlighting the firm underlying tone in the European complex.
  • Crush margins: Rapeseed oil and meal values remain supportive, keeping EU crushers incentivised to run at high utilisation and sustain demand for seed, including imports.
  • Ukraine’s larger crop: Expanded Ukrainian production and export availability weigh on local prices but cannot be fully monetised due to logistics constraints, creating an overhang in interior markets.
  • Policy cushioning: Kyiv’s support for farmers under disrupted logistics reduces distress selling, moderating downside pressure but not fully offsetting basis widening near the ports.

Trading Outlook (next 1–2 weeks)

  • Producers (Ukraine): Consider scaling in sales on any local rallies tied to short-lived improvements in Black Sea logistics or Euronext spikes above €560/t Nov-26, while keeping some volume unsold in case of further global oilseed strength.
  • Exporters/Traders: Maintain cautious forward coverage; basis risk remains high. Hedging physical long positions with Euronext futures continues to make sense as long as the Paris–Ukraine spread stays wide enough to absorb logistics premiums.
  • EU Crushers/Buyers: Ukrainian rapeseed remains competitively priced versus domestic/EU origins. Look to extend coverage on dips in FOB Black Sea offers if freight and security conditions allow, especially for late-Q4 and Q1 arrivals.

3‑Day Regional Price Indication (UA)

  • Odesa, CPT rapeseed: Bias slightly soft to sideways over the next 3 days, with any further port disruption likely to cap bids near current levels around €445–450/t.
  • Odesa, FCA 42% oil: Expected to trade sideways, holding a firm premium to CPT given loading and quality, around €475–485/t.
  • Kyiv, FCA 42% oil: Likely sideways to mildly firm, supported by domestic crushers and inland demand, roughly in the €455–465/t range.
