Rapeseed Prices Recover, but Ukrainian Logistics Costs Cap the Rally

Ukrainian rapeseed exports jump and prices firm on MATIF strength, but high logistics costs and weak EU crush demand cap upside. Concise market outlook.

Rapeseed prices have rebounded in Ukraine in line with stronger global futures, but rising logistics costs to the EU and weak crush demand are preventing a full price recovery. Export flows have surged versus July, tightening nearby farm supply, while processors keep bids nearly unchanged amid growing seed availability. The market is currently pulled between firm external benchmarks (MATIF around mid‑€550/t) and local bottlenecks. Export prices in Danube ports and at western borders have moved higher in dollar and hryvnia terms, stimulating sales and a sharp increase in August shipments, mainly to Germany, the Netherlands and the Czech Republic. However, unresolved issues with meal and oil exports and congested land and river routes are limiting how much of the global rally can be passed back to Ukrainian farmers. In this context, short‑term price risk is tilted moderately higher but with a hard cap from logistics and EU demand.

Prices

Rapeseed stock quotations in Ukraine have regained their lost positions over the past week, modestly improving export demand but not enough to trigger a strong domestic price rally. Export bid prices in Danube ports rose to about $480–500/t, equivalent to roughly €445–465/t, while prices at the western border climbed to $490–510/t, or around €455–475/t, delivered to terminals.

In the internal market, processors are holding purchase prices for 44% oil rapeseed at 21,000–22,000 UAH/t delivered to plants, reflecting both growing seed supply and difficulties selling rapeseed meal and oil abroad. Spot offers in Ukraine on 3 September show FCA Kyiv at about €460/t and FCA Odesa at about €480/t, slightly above late‑August levels and broadly tracking firmer MATIF benchmarks near €555/t for November 2026 contracts.

Supply & Demand

Ukraine sharply increased rapeseed exports in late August, shipping about 255.2 thousand tons during 1–27 August versus only 11.8 thousand tons over the same number of days in July. This reflects both the seasonal harvest peak and improved price incentives once futures recovered, with Germany, the Netherlands and the Czech Republic acting as key destinations.

The surge in exports indicates robust foreign demand for Ukrainian rapeseed seed itself, even as EU processing margins remain cautious. However, Ukrainian crushers face persistent limitations in exporting rapeseed meal and oil due to logistics bottlenecks and constrained Black Sea capacity, forcing more seed into export channels rather than domestic processing. Despite this, overall seed supply on the Ukrainian market continues to grow as harvest deliveries progress, keeping processors relatively well covered in the near term.

Fundamentals & External Drivers

Global rapeseed benchmarks have strengthened noticeably, supported by firmer canola and crude oil prices and a broader rally in vegetable oils. Recent data show November rapeseed futures on Euronext Paris around €555/t, up roughly 4–5% over the past week, while Tindex spot indications hover near €554/t, confirming the bullish external tone.

For Ukraine, the main headwind is logistics. Higher freight and transshipment costs via Danube ports and western borders significantly erode export parity, meaning only part of the MATIF rally is transmitted to farmgate prices. At the same time, continued challenges in moving rapeseed oil and meal discourage crushers from raising bids, even as raw seed exports accelerate. If freight and border congestion intensify further during the sunflower, soybean and corn export campaign, the basis against MATIF could widen again in September–October.

Weather & Regional Outlook

Short‑term weather forecasts for key central and western Ukrainian agricultural regions point to mostly seasonal conditions in early September, with moderate temperatures and scattered showers. No immediate weather shock is expected for rapeseed fields, and with the bulk of the 2026 harvest already completed, weather is currently a secondary driver compared with logistics and demand.

Stable field conditions should allow ongoing transport from farm to collection points, but any localized heavy rain along the Danube or western rail corridors could temporarily disrupt truck and barge flows, further amplifying freight costs. For now, however, the primary risk premium in prices remains linked to geopolitical and infrastructure uncertainty rather than to agronomic stress.

Short-Term Forecast & Trading Outlook

Given the strong recovery in global futures and the sharp August export pick‑up, Ukrainian rapeseed prices have scope for modest further gains in the near term. Yet elevated logistics costs, weak EU crush margins and unresolved rapeseed meal and oil export issues are likely to cap the upside and keep domestic processor prices relatively stable.

  • Farmers: Consider scaling into sales on current rallies, especially near western borders where export bids are strongest, while holding a residual portion in case MATIF extends gains.
  • Exporters: Lock in margins opportunistically when MATIF spikes, but remain cautious on freight and border capacity; basis risk versus Paris futures remains high.
  • Processors: Maintain disciplined bids around 21,000–22,000 UAH/t unless meal and oil outlets improve; prioritize coverage for Q4 but avoid over‑paying for nearby volumes.

3‑Day Directional Price Outlook (EUR, indicative)

  • Ukraine, Kyiv FCA: Slightly firmer bias; range ~€455–465/t as global support persists but local supply remains ample.
  • Ukraine, Odesa FCA: Stable to slightly higher; range ~€475–485/t, closely tied to Danube export bids and freight conditions.
  • Paris MATIF (Nov 2026 futures): Consolidation likely around €545–565/t after recent gains, with direction driven by crude oil and broader vegoils sentiment.
