Rapeseed rallies on biodiesel tailwind while physical premiums stabilise
Rapeseed prices firm on MATIF and in physical markets as stronger biodiesel-linked vegetable oil demand offsets steady EU supply. Concise outlook and trading cues.
Prices
MATIF rapeseed November 2026 futures are holding in the mid-550 EUR/t area, having defended key support around 530–535 EUR/t and recently trading near 555–557 EUR/t on 1 September 2026. Speculative funds continue to build long exposure after the market rebounded above 545 EUR/t late August, confirming an uptrend driven by the broader oilseeds rally and improved crush margins.
ICE canola futures have surged more strongly, with front contracts up around 3–3.5% on 1 September, reinforcing the bullish tone in the North American oilseed complex and supporting European rapeseed through arbitrage. Physical rapeseed prices in France currently indicate around 0.65 EUR/kg FOB Paris (≈650 EUR/t), only marginally softer than mid-August and still trading at a premium to MATIF, while Ukrainian FCA values around 0.45–0.46 EUR/kg (≈450–460 EUR/t) reflect both freight and risk discounts but have stabilised after prior declines.
Supply & Demand
US biofuel policy is the key new driver: the EPA’s decision to exempt a group of small refineries from 2025 blending obligations but roll the unfulfilled volumes into 2026–27 effectively raises the burden on larger refiners. This boosts future demand for vegetable oils, particularly soybean oil as a primary biodiesel feedstock, and explains the sharp rise in soy oil-linked RIN prices above USD 2.30 as well as the rally in soybeans and soymeal.
The rapeseed complex benefits indirectly. Higher soy oil values lift the entire vegetable oil curve, making rapeseed oil increasingly attractive in EU biodiesel blends. USDA data show US crush margins improving, with more than half of the margin now generated by oil, underlining that oil is the main value driver. For the EU, rapeseed oil remains central in biodiesel production, while overall EU rapeseed output for 2026/27 is projected broadly flat near 20.5 Mt, with only modest yield reductions after spring dryness. This combination of steady seed availability and firmer oil demand tightens the balance sheet at the margin.
China’s soybean import programme, including around 5 Mt of US soybeans for September–November shipment by state buyers, also supports oilseed prices more generally. While this demand is bean-focused rather than rapeseed-specific, it helps keep a floor under global oilseed values and discourages aggressive price discounting in the rapeseed segment. In Ukraine, a good overall grain and oilseed harvest helps maintain exportable rapeseed supplies, but logistical constraints and war-related risks continue to cap flows and keep a structural discount to EU origin.
Fundamentals & Market Structure
On the processing side, recent US census data confirm strong crushing activity with July soybean crush slightly above expectations and crush margins ticking higher. Crucially, the oil share of crush value has climbed above 50%, demonstrating that the market is increasingly pricing in tightness and policy-driven demand in oils rather than meals. Soybean oil stocks remain only moderately above expectations, which the market reads as manageable given the anticipated rise in biofuel usage.
In Europe, fund positioning in MATIF rapeseed is decisively bullish: investment funds have expanded net long positions, adding fresh longs while trimming shorts as prices recovered. Commercials remain heavily net short, reflecting active hedging by crushers and physical holders into the price strength. This classic configuration – strong fund length versus commercial selling – typically supports a trend-following market but also raises the risk of sharper corrections if macro sentiment or the vegoil complex turn.
Nearby MATIF spreads show a modest carry from Nov-26 to Feb-27 and into the 2027 contracts, signalling that the market is not facing acute nearby tightness but is willing to pay for time value. Forward rapeseed futures around 2027–28 trade roughly 25–30 EUR/t below spot French physical prices, a curve shape consistent with adequate EU crop prospects and expectations that current biodiesel-related premiums may normalise slightly once policy effects are fully absorbed and new crushing capacity comes onstream.
Weather & Regional Outlook
Weather is currently a secondary driver compared with policy and macro factors. Earlier-season dryness in parts of the EU trimmed yield potential modestly, but timely rains in France and northern Germany allowed the 2026 harvest to finish close to average. In contrast, Ukraine has enjoyed relatively favourable weather with an abundant crop, helping to maintain its role as a key supplier to the EU despite ongoing security challenges.
Looking ahead into early September, no major weather shock is visible for the main winter rapeseed seeding window in western and central Europe. Cooler and somewhat wetter conditions should support soil moisture replenishment for new-crop sowing rather than generate fresh bullish impulses. Market attention is therefore likely to stay focused on global biodiesel policy developments, crude oil price moves and the progression of North American canola harvests.
Trading Outlook (Next 1–3 Weeks)
- Producers (EU/Ukraine): Use the current mid-550 EUR/t MATIF range to lock in a portion of 2026/27 sales, especially where local cash prices still capture 80–100 EUR/t premium to futures. Retain some upside exposure given ongoing policy-driven strength in vegoils.
- Crushers & Biodiesel Plants: Consider scaling into coverage on dips back toward 540–545 EUR/t MATIF, as soybean oil and canola fundamentals remain supportive. Focus hedging on the oil leg, where margin sensitivity to policy is highest.
- Importers & Feed Compounders: For rapeseed and rapemeal, avoid chasing short-term spikes; instead, use any pullbacks driven by macro risk-off or temporary soy oil weakness to extend coverage into Q1–Q2 2027.
- Speculative Traders: The trend remains up but crowded: maintain a cautiously bullish bias above 545 EUR/t with tight stops, watching US biofuel headlines and fund positioning data for signs of exhaustion.
3-Day Directional Price Indication (EUR)
- MATIF Rapeseed Nov-26: Sideways to slightly firmer in a 545–565 EUR/t band, tracking soy oil and ICE canola.
- French Physical (FOB Paris): Stable around 640–660 EUR/t, minor downside risk if futures soften but supported by crush and biodiesel demand.
- Ukrainian FCA (Kyiv/Odesa): Mostly steady near 440–470 EUR/t, with basis moves more driven by logistics and Black Sea risk than by futures direction.
