Ukrainian rapeseed prices hold stable while Euronext/MATIF futures firm on tight EU supply. Analysis of price spreads, supply-demand, weather and a 3-day outlook.

Ukrainian rapeseed prices are holding broadly steady in early September, even as benchmark Euronext/MATIF futures edge higher on tight EU supply and firmer vegetable oil markets. The stability reflects balanced local farmer selling against steady export and crush demand, with Ukraine still priced at a clear discount to EU origins. Physical bids for rapeseed in Ukraine’s key export corridor around Odesa and the domestic hub Kyiv are little changed over the past week in euro terms, despite a modest rebound in Paris futures to around EUR 555–560/t by 8 September. Stable weather during harvest and ongoing logistics constraints in the Black Sea are tempering aggressive selling, while EU crushers continue to look to discounted Black Sea supplies to supplement a smaller 2026/27 EU crop.

Prices

Benchmark Euronext rapeseed futures have firmed, with front contracts trading near EUR 557/t on 8 September, up roughly 3–4% over the past month and around 20% year-on-year. French physical rapeseed values are broadly aligned with MATIF, reflecting tight nearby availability and weather concerns in parts of Western Europe.

Against this backdrop, Ukrainian rapeseed remains heavily discounted. Current CPT and FCA bids in Ukraine equate to roughly EUR 445–480/t depending on quality and location, implying a discount of about EUR 70–110/t versus the Euronext benchmark and nearby French origin. This wide spread continues to underpin interest from EU crushers in Black Sea supplies, particularly for prompt shipments.

Supply & Demand

EU rapeseed supply for 2026/27 is tighter than initially expected. Recent official and analyst updates point to EU production around 20.5 Mt, trimmed after spring dryness clipped yields in parts of northern and eastern Europe. With consumption forecast near 25.8 Mt, EU crushers remain structurally dependent on imports.

Ukraine’s 2026/27 rapeseed crop is projected larger year-on-year at roughly 3.4–3.6 Mt, with exports in the region of 2.0–2.1 Mt, keeping the country a key supplier to the EU. Market reports indicate that, despite discounts, Ukrainian rapeseed shipments into the EU since the start of the marketing year are running well below last season, partly due to logistics bottlenecks and earlier-than-usual EU harvest timing.

Globally, the oilseeds complex is underpinned by firm vegetable oil demand and weather-related risks in other crops. Rapeseed prices are benefiting from this broader strength, but the sizeable Black Sea crop and currency factors keep Ukrainian origin competitively priced, especially versus Canadian canola and EU domestic supplies.

Weather & Logistics Focus: Ukraine (Region UA)

Short-term weather in southern Ukraine, including Odesa region, is relatively benign. Forecasts for the next 5–7 days indicate mostly dry to partly cloudy conditions with mild temperatures, supporting the final stages of rapeseed handling and transport rather than posing new yield risks, as harvest is essentially complete.

The current stability in weather reduces immediate supply shocks from the field, shifting attention to logistics and export corridors. Continued security-related disruptions and capacity limits in Black Sea and Danube routes remain the main constraints on translating Ukraine’s competitive prices into higher export volumes, which in turn caps potential downside in local farmgate bids.

Fundamentals & Market Drivers

  • EU tightness vs Ukrainian surplus: EU output stagnating near 20.5 Mt with firm crush keeps internal balances tight, while Ukraine’s larger crop and exportable surplus underpin strong flows towards the EU when logistics allow.
  • MATIF rebound: Euronext rapeseed futures around EUR 555–560/t reflect tighter EU nearby availability and hot, dry spells in key French regions, encouraging crushers to seek cheaper Black Sea origin.
  • Discounted Black Sea basis: Ukrainian rapeseed trades roughly EUR 70–110/t below MATIF and French physical values, a spread wide enough to absorb elevated freight and risk premiums while still attractive to EU buyers.
  • Speculative interest: Rising rapeseed futures and strong year-on-year gains point to renewed speculative length in the oilseeds complex, increasing short-term price volatility around macro and energy headlines.

Trading Outlook (Next 1–2 Weeks)

  • Farmers (Ukraine, region UA): With local bids stable and MATIF trending higher, consider gradual, scale-up sales rather than aggressive forward selling. Use current firmness in EU futures to lock in additional volumes if the MATIF–Ukraine basis narrows sharply.
  • Crushers (EU / UA): For nearby needs, Ukrainian origin remains attractive. Monitor freight and corridor risks; any deterioration that widens logistics costs could quickly reduce the current discount advantage.
  • Traders: The wide spread between Ukrainian physical and MATIF supports basis trades: long Ukrainian physical/short MATIF, while carefully managing logistics and security risk. Be alert to any policy or corridor headlines that could trigger sharp basis moves.

3-Day Directional Price Indication (Region UA & Key Benchmark)

  • Ukraine, Odesa CPT rapeseed: Sideways to slightly firmer (0–5 EUR/t) as stable weather and steady export interest offset logistics constraints.
  • Ukraine, Kyiv FCA rapeseed: Sideways (±3 EUR/t), tracking local crusher demand and transport costs rather than international futures moves.
  • Euronext/MATIF rapeseed futures: Mildly bullish bias (up to +5–10 EUR/t range) while EU balance remains tight and energy/veg-oil markets stay firm, but vulnerable to quick corrections on macro risk-off days.
